How We Think

Understand first.
Decide second.

We believe that understanding the problem first will always result in a better solution.

It sounds simple, but it is surprisingly easy to start looking for answers before the real problem is understood.

CUSIO takes a different approach.

We ask questions, listen, investigate and look at the bigger picture before deciding what should happen next.

Start with the problem. Not the answer.

Sometimes people come to us knowing exactly what they think they need. Sometimes they don't. Either is fine.

Our first job is to understand what is actually happening, what needs to be achieved and what constraints need to be considered.

That may involve technical requirements, standards and regulations, commercial considerations, customer expectations, practical limitations or several of these at once.

Once the problem is properly understood, the options usually become clearer.

Connecting the dots.

Technical, regulatory and commercial decisions rarely exist in isolation. A technically correct solution may not be commercially practical. A good commercial opportunity may have regulatory hurdles. A compliance requirement may create an entirely different way of approaching a product or project.

CUSIO looks across those boundaries. We bring together information, experience and the right people to develop the bigger picture. That helps separate what really matters from what doesn't.

How we approach a problem.

01

Understand

Ask questions. Listen. Understand what is really happening and what needs to be achieved.

02

Explore

Look at the technical, regulatory, commercial and practical considerations. Identify what we know, what we don't know and what needs to be verified.

03

Connect

Bring the information, people and perspectives together. Look for relationships, conflicts, opportunities and consequences that may not initially be obvious.

04

Decide

Develop a practical way forward based on what we now understand.

Understand first. Decide second.

Sometimes the best answer is to do less.

We don't believe every problem needs a complicated solution. Most don't.

Our job is to understand what's really driving the issue, separate what's important from what isn't, and help our clients move forward with confidence.

Sometimes that means developing a new solution. Sometimes it means changing direction. And sometimes the best advice we can give is to keep doing what you're already doing.

The right answer matters more than creating more work.

We don't pretend to know everything.

Technical and regulated industries are too complex for anyone to have every answer. Good judgement includes knowing when something needs to be checked.

If we know the answer, we'll tell you. If we don't, we'll say so. Then we'll determine what needs to be verified, who needs to be involved or where the right information can be found.

Being confident and being certain are not the same thing. We would rather verify something than give an answer simply because one is expected.

The right people make better solutions.

Many difficult problems cross organisational and technical boundaries. One of CUSIO's strengths is bringing together people with different knowledge, experience and perspectives.

That might include customers, manufacturers, engineers, technical specialists, regulators, service providers or commercial partners.

We don't need to be the expert in every part of the problem. Our role is often to make sure the right expertise is connected and everyone can see the bigger picture.
